Recognition
Femi Kuti has received multiple Grammy Award nominations for Best World Music Album, and remains one of the most prominent living ambassadors of Afrobeat — a genre recognised by UNESCO as part of Nigeria's intangible cultural heritage since 2018.
Afrobeat within African music
Afrobeat is one strand within a much larger family of African musical traditions: highlife from Ghana and Nigeria, Congolese soukous, South African mbaqanga and amapiano, Malian desert blues, and the Afrobeats pop wave that followed. Femi Kuti's work sits at the hinge between his father's original Afrobeat and the artists — from Burna Boy to Seun Kuti — who continue to draw on it today.
